Unit I: 

Introduction to Tourism:

Meaning and Definition of Tourism, prerequisite for being a tourist, Basis of Tourism, Dimensions of Tourism phenomenon. Understanding Tourism terminology. Concept of a Tourist, Visitor and an Excursionist- UNWTO’s Classification of Travelers, limits to travel, elements of tourism phenomenon, scope of tourism, factors for growth in tourism, interdisciplinary nature of tourism studies. Types of Tourism – On the basis of movement patterns, seasonal character, purpose of tourism and Forms of Tourism. History of Tourism Growth and development of Tourism through the ages. Travel in the Prehistoric times, in the middle ages, the Grand Tour, in the Industrial age, Concept of Paid Holidays, Development of Modern transport system.

Nature of Tourism:

Basic nature of tourism, Lei per’s Model on nature of tourism-three basic elements Tourists, Geographical element & Tourism Industry. Varied benefits of tourism. Push-pull forces of tourism. 5 A’s of tourism, components of Tourism, - The basic or Primary components that formulate Tourism – Transportation- Air, Water, Land, Road. Accommodation- Hotel, Motel, Resort, Caravans, Youth hostels etc .Attraction- Monuments, Theme Parks, Wildlife, Museums, Art Galleries, Cultural centers. Tourism Infrastructure and Superstructure. Secondary components. Peters inventory of Tourist attraction : Cultural, Traditions, Scenic, Entertainment, Others. Elements & geographical components of tourism

Tourism: The Psychological dimension:

Tourism and human behavior, psychology of early travelers. Motivation –Definition, Motivators of modern day tourism as given by McIntosh. Tourism Business & its Impacts- Concept of tourism business, Impact of Tourism: Economic Impacts, Social Cultural Impacts & Environmental impacts. Tourism Economic Impact- Tourism as a great economic force, Its significance, multiplier & its types (Tourism Multiplier, Employment Multiplier, income multiplier) relationship with tourism business & infrastructure.

Tourism Socio-Cultural and Environmental Impacts:

Positive and negative impact of tourism development on the society and culture, Sex Tourism, Drug tourism. Tourism Environmental Impacts: The impact of tourism development on the Environmental Positive & Negative impact, tourism development and environmental pollution (Air, water land). The emerging concept of Ecotourism

Concept of Domestic and International Tourism:

Modern Global tourism scenario (major tourism countries, statistics & facts), Concept of Modern Mass Tourism, Urban & Rural Tourism and their impact on community. Tourism scenario in India– Potentials destination, Problems and prospects. India’s resource potential for tourism recognition by Government, Ways to stimulate tourism in India. (Steps taken by the government & private sector to boost tourism in India.) The existing pattern and Future trends: World’s major countries in terms of Total expenditure abroad, (domestic and international) Countries having maximum International tourism expenditure, (International Tourism)  Space tourism- A new concept, Precedents. Private space tourism, list of flown space tourists, Future space tourists, Commercial space flights, Legality, Virgin Galactic –leading space tourism group, Commercial space station and Space hotels.
