Objective: 

Course objective:
1. To understand the concept of Tourism phenomenon, components & tourism product & resources.
2. To analyze the relationship between different natural & manmade resources and tourism

Unit I: 

Introduction to Tourism –Meaning and dimensions of Tourism phenomenon. Understanding Tourism terminology. Concept of a Tourist, Visitor and an Excursionist.

History of Tourism –Growth and development of Tourism through the ages. Travel in the Prehistoric times, in the Middle ages, the Grand Tour, in the Industrial age, Concept of Paid Holidays, Development of Modern transport system.

Unit II: 

Basic Constituents of tourism industry - Transportation, Accommodation and Attraction, Peters inventory of Tourist attraction: Cultural, Traditions, Scenic, Entertainment, Others.
Nature of Tourism –Lei per’s Model on nature of tourism, Classification of Tourism based on Purpose of Tourism, Geographical location.

Unit III: 

Tourism Product: Definition, Salient features of tourism product, Product life cycle. Tourism Resources of India: Types and their geographical distribution.
• Wildlife - an introduction to wildlife tourism, existing Wildlife sanctuaries and National Parks.
• Mountains - Tourist Resource potential in Mountains with reference to Himalayas.
• Desert Tourism – India’s main Desert area .Existing destinations for desert tourism.
• Beach Tourism- What are coastal areas, Existing beaches and beach tourism pattern.
• Island Tourism with reference to Andaman and Nicobar Islands & Lakshadweep. An introduction, its tourism attractions, fairs and festivals, formalities to visit.

Unit IV: 

Cultural heritage of India- Performing arts -Dance :Theory ,Technique- Nritta & Abhinaya. Classical dances of India: Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Kath kali, Manipuri.
Folk dances: Meaning, Difference between folk and classical dance. Folk Dance forms of Rajasthan.

Unit V: 

The Psychological dimension of Tourism: Meaning and importance of motivation, different motivations for Tourism – Modern day motivators as given by McIntosh
Emerging role of Information Technology in Tourism: An introduction to Computers, Internet and Computer Reservation Systems ( In Hotels & Airlines )
