Introduction to Tourism:

Meaning and Definition of Tourism, prerequisite for being a tourist, Basis of Tourism, Dimensions of Tourism phenomenon. Understanding Tourism terminology. Concept of a Tourist, Visitor and an Excursionist- UNWTO’s Classification of Travelers, limits to travel, elements of tourism phenomenon, scope of tourism, factors for growth in tourism, interdisciplinary nature of tourism studies.

Nature of Tourism:

Basic nature of tourism, Lei per’s Model on nature of tourism-three basic elements Tourists, Geographical element & Tourism Industry. Varied benefits of tourism. Push-pull forces of tourism. Types of Tourism – On the basis of movement patterns, seasonal character, purpose of tourism and Forms of Tourism.

5 A’s of tourism Components of Tourism:

The basic or Primary components that formulate Tourism – Transportation- Air, Water, Land, Road. Accommodation- Hotel, Motel, Resort, Caravans, Youth hostels etc .Attraction- Monuments, Theme Parks, Wildlife, Museums, Art Galleries, Cultural centers. Tourism Infrastructure and Superstructure. Secondary components. Peters inventory of Tourist attraction: Cultural, Traditions, Scenic, Entertainment, Others. Elements & geographical components of tourism

History of Tourism :

Growth and development of Tourism through the ages. Travel in the Prehistoric times, in the Middle ages, the Grand Tour, in the Industrial age, Pushing and Pulling forces of Tourism industry (to be deleted) . Concept of Paid Holidays, Development of Modern transport system.

 Tourism and human behavior, psychology of early travelers. Motivation –Definition, Motivators of modern day tourism as given by McIntosh.
